Jannatul-Baqi – Madinah places to visit

The “Garden of Heaven” is the most blessed and spiritual graveyard in Saudi Arbia. The Al-Baqi Graveyard is also known as known as Jannatul-Baqi and Baqi’u l-Qarqad, meaning “Orchard of the Boxthorn Trees” since the area was covered with boxthorn trees when the prophet Muhammad arrived at Madinah from Mecca in September 622. Muslims who pass away during Hajj or Umrah have the honour to be buried in this cemetery.

The Al-Baqi Cemetery is located opposite the south eastern section of the wall of the Masjid, close to our hotel and, of all the historic places in Madinah closest to Al-Masjid An-Nabawi (the Prophet’s Mosque). Its total area covers more than 56,000 square metres and has an imposing marble wall around the entire cemetery uniting the old and new areas.

Graves in Jannatul-Baqi

Al-Baqi is a powerful place, as it has the honour of hosting hundreds of saints and a great number of companions and family members of the Prophet Muhammad. Among the notable Muslims buried here are the Mothers of the Believers (the Prophet’s wives excluding Khadijah and Maymunah), the Prophet’s son Ibrahim, the Prophet’s daughter Ruqayyah, the Prophet’s uncle Abbas, the Prophet’s aunt Safiyyah and the Prophet’s grandson Al-Hasan ibn Ali.

After the Prophet’s son Ibrahim died in infancy and over whom the Prophet wept bitterly, the people of Madinah began to use the cemetery for the burial of their own dead, so the graveyard has become the final resting place of the residents of Madinah and since the time of Hijrah, of those from neighbouring areas and of visitors as well.

According to the tradition Muhammad said a prayer every time he passed the “Garden of Heaven”. The Prophet prayed for those who were buried there. Following the Prophet’s example, it is recommended to visit Al-Baqi and appeal to Allah for those buried in its noble earth. Several hadiths of the Prophet mention that visiting Jannatul-Baqi in Madinah is both honourable and righteous.
